Home About Us History of District Judiciary
In 1787, Mr. Peters Speck was promoted to the post of Collector, judge, and Magistrate. He had two assistants. One was working in the Murshidabad district of India, and the other was working in the Natore district of Bangladesh. This shows that at that time, the same person was performing administrative, revenue, and judicial duties. In 1793, the offices of Judge and Collector were separated, the Civil Court was converted into District Judge Court, and the post of District Judge was created.
From the Rajshahi District Gazetteer of 1916, it is known that at that time there was 1 District and Sessions Judge in Rajshahi district. He was also the District and Sessions Judge of Malda district of India. However, his headquarters were in Rajshahi.
In March 1864, the work of the heritage building of Rajshahi Judge Court was started under the supervision of French Executive Engineer Mr. E. S. B. Pereira and was completed in August 1865.
Our story Rajshahi
Two main courts called Nizamat Adalat were established and a Faujdar was appointed in each district to maintain peace. In 1775, the Sadar Nizamat Adalat was shifted from Kolkata to Murshidabad. Mohammad Reza Khan assumed the title of Nayeb Nazim and was appointed its Chief Justice. Probably in 1862, the Sadar Nizamat Adalat and the Supreme Court of Kolkata were merged to form the High Court. In January 1786, when Mr. Dulles resigned, Mr. Peters Speck succeeded him as Collector and was also promoted to the post of Judge and Magistrate in 1787 as Collector and Magistrate he received a total of 15 hundred rupees as monthly salary and house rent. He had two assistants with salaries of 5 hundred and 4 hundred rupees. One of the assistants lived in Moradabad in the present Murshidabad district of India and the other lived in Natore. This shows that at the beginning of the modern administrative system, the same person was responsible for administration, revenue, and justice, and the administrative work here was carried out from two places, Murshidabad and Natore. It is known from the Rajshahi District Gazetteer written in 1916 that at that time there was 1 District and Sessions Judge in Rajshahi district. He was also the District and Sessions Judge of the present Malda district of India. However, the headquarters was in Rajshahi city. According to the information received on 07-12-2003, there is one District and Sessions Judge in Rajshahi. There were three Additional District and Sessions Judges under him. However, since 1 Additional District and Sessions Judge was transferred to Gazipur, the number of Additional District and Sessions Judges is currently two. Sub and Assistant Sessions Judges are two, Sub Judge (Finance and Loan Court) is one, Senior Assistant Judge (Rajshahi Sadar) is one, Senior Assistant Judge (Additional Sadar) is one. Currently, there are 1 District and Sessions Judge, 03 Additional District and Sessions Judges, 03 Joint District and Sessions Judges, 04 Senior Assistant Judges, and 07 Assistant Judges working.
